Main Engineering

If the main bridge is the brain of a starship, main engineering is undoubtedly its heart. At the heart of an engineering section is the warp core. The warp core of the USS Majestic is unique to Federation vessels; instead of a column, it runs the entire length of the secondary hull, from the antimatter injectors in the bow, just above the main deflector, to the matter injectors in the stern, above the cargo doors to the fabrication bays.

The design of this elongated warp core requires extreme care in the focusing of the matter and antimatter streams, but once achieved, has resulted in a core both more stable and more efficient than more compact versions.

There are two levels to main engineering. The lower level actually dips in the middle, so that most sentients can pass under the core with adequate headroom. The upper level is broken by the warp core, but has a number of catwalks that lead up and over the warp core in a fashion that resemble old stone bridges. The silvery light from the warp core lends the room something of a romantic air.

Most of the engineering duty stations are located in upper engineering, clustered around the matter-antimatter reaction chamber. Secondary stations monitor the injectors at the far forward and aft ends of the warp core, and a few rarely used stations are available along the length for maintenance of the magnetic constrictors.
